R56 ...I love my R56 MCS
looking at this board tonight (after my basketball team lost), it was bothering me that it seems to be overrun with jealous owners of the older models. (I guess the R56 owners are too busy enjoying their cars to post here.)
It's awesome that you love your new car. I hope to share that sentiment in a couple weeks.
I am truly exhausted with all of the threads going in circles over which is better, which generation has the most faults, which has the most loyalty, etc etc. ENOUGH! It's an argument that will never be settled, and it doesn't need to be! LynnEl hit the nail on the head with his "epiphany" (see thread with that title).
We are all Mini owners and/or Mini lovers. I don't think I'm alone in saying that I would rather discuss my enjoyment of the car and the differences between the two gens in an educated and open-minded manner. No more taking sides; no more lines drawn in the sand. Those of us who own (or will own) an R56 have done so only because we fell in love with the R50/R53 first.
I don't think you would because you have more class than that. The whole problem is that more & more people here on NAM (from both generations) are leaving their manners at the door.
There are many reasons I would not do that!!
Results of recent R56 MCS testing seem impressive...it is becoming harder to turn a blind eye to legitimate improvements that have been made to the car even if we don't particularly favor all the changes.
From the perspective of the overall enthusiast community, however, and considering the diversity of our MINIs and our approaches to them (from track toy to daily driver), jealousy is almost irrelevant when we love our MINI of our choice.
I can undestand that no one likes having barbs thrown at their MINI, though, and it does happen both ways.

This stuff must be road rage coming out sideways... let's call it virtual rage.
How about last week's thread regarding the cartoon where one of the characters whispers to his urban friend while pointing at a Mini. The cartoonist leaves it up to the viewer/reader to interpret what was whispered about the nature of the Mini driver... WOW, plenty of folks here at NAM were outraged by the cartoon. Funny thing is, it was a fill-in-the-blanks dialog. Maybe those upset NAM'ers ought to spend a couple hundred bucks on therapy, instead of the anthracite headliner option on their R56's!
Point is, I think folks might be getting a bit too anthropomorphic with their itsy bitsy cute R53's and those mean, masculine R56's.

From the perspective of the overall enthusiast community, however (and given the diversity of our MINIs and our approaches to them), jealousy is almost irrelevant if you love your car.
Very true...I was editing that bit.
It is hard to ignore many of the more obvious improvements, though...credit where credit's due. The engine seems quite good. In any case, I'll still be driving my Cooper.
No one will be jealous of me, but I'll be quite happy!

That's it I just had an epiphany, the next time a 2nd gen owner ticks me off I shall scream BURBLE ENVY. I am good to go now
Now, now........
Friends! C'mon now....please behave! There is room enough in the MINI/Mini family for a wide variety of enthusiasts and their individually-spec'd cars! Let's welcome our new R56 brethren and sistren as the family members they are. Since the beginning of the new MINI community, we early-adopters made it a point to set a tone of inclusiveness and friendliness. Please set down the daggers and shake hands. Let's motor....TOGETHER.

No...no whine, no burble here...not even a 6th gear!!! If I had them you'd bet I'd have gotten attached to them real quick...just like I have with every thing else on my own personal MINI!!!

I tell ya what, I feel what the Op is saying and what he is feeling. I have just read most of this thread and then went to the "comparison" thread. If I had just bought an R56, I'd be pissed too. Come on, we all love the MINI. There's going to be more changes in the future. To the avg Joe on the street, a MINI is a MINI and they all look good. I understand discussion and debate, but the names I've seen thrown at the new version are disgusting. The buyers of the R56 that come to this website are just as enthusiastic about their new MINI as you are about yours. Lets all appreciate the differences in our little MINI world.

I hope R56 owners will feel free to gush about their cars. They're as excited as we were when we got ours, yet at the same time this generation of MINIs brings the biggest changes to the car, too. I was out test driving an R56 MCS this morning with UJ*. It was a true thrill...very quick!!!

*(the only guy I know who has owned a R53 MCS, an R53 MCSJCW, and an R50 Cooper...in that order)
Someone here in NAM that was dead set in taking delivery of his new R56 MCS order next week, just less than 48 hours ago, cancelled his order altogether and instead decided to purchase one of the very "last" brand new '06 R53s on the dealer lot.
See thread "That Darn R53..." for the whole story. A wonderful discussion that was absolutely brilliant totally devoid of personal attacks and derogatory comments. The whole community came together and we all "helped" Dean make the final decision. He fell in love with the R53 in despite of having already placed an order for a new R56. It cuts both way guys.
This bickering has to stop. Everybody is entitled to their pro/con opinions. What makes it wrong is when these discussion degenerate into pointless flame wars.

Funny... I've got friends with 50s, 53s and I have a deposit on a 56. All very nice cars. There does seem to be a little too much talk about which is best. It's a question with no answer.
25 years of messing around with Porsches and it's the same thing. Each new gen has detractors and supporters. To some, it's the end of western civilization. To others, the best thing since sliced bread.
We're ALL enthusiasts here. Let's enjoy it.......

Hmmm... too bad. You know once you're properly indocrinated into the club you won't be allowed to associate with them anymore.
I'm sorry...I have disowned Thep as a companion. That you remember him incriminates you in his latest "Shoreline Property on Mars" real estate scheme.
Good to hear from you UJ! Been over on the MINI2 board mostly these days. I trust all is well!
....and now back to our regularly scheduled thread....

It is that I am smart, confident, stylish,
That post seemed self indulging at best. At worst, it was a direct attempt to irritate R50/53 owners.
I vote it the worst post of the year, to date.
I think the next time someone is feeling down, for any reason, you should go and take a long drive, and then come back here when your feeling better. I think both cars are great, and expect some growing pains with the R56. This will be my first MINI, and I plan on being friends with all owners who want to be.
