R56 Bi-Xenon Bulb Type
Bi-Xenon Bulb Type
I'm looking to get a 8000K replacement bulb for my xenon headlights, but need to know which type of bulb the Cooper's use. Does anyone know (H1,H3,H4,H7,H8,H9,H10,H11,H13,9004,9005,9006,9007 ,D2R,D2S,880,881)?
Do you have the factory Xenon lights? If so, there's no bulb to upgrade. A true Xenon light works by arcing high voltage through Xenon gas, which excites the gas and causes it to release photons.
If you have the standard halogen lights (which are a filament that is heated to produce light), you can replace them with halogen bulbs of different color. Some of those are called Xenon bulbs, because they either replicate the light of a true xenon light by using a higher wattage and/or because they put some xenon gas in the bulb. That doesn't make them the same as "real" Xenon lights.

dneal, xenon lights have bulbs too
usman88, ALL factory xenon's on the market today use either D2S or D1S bulbs, and a few D4S type bulbs
all of the above fit in the same socket, PC32-D, which means all of them are mechanically compatible
all the bulb types you listed: H1,H3,H4,H7,H8,H9,H10,H11,H13,9004,9005,9006,9007, 880,881, except for D2S/D2R are all halogen bulbs
if you have the factory halogens, you're looking for xenon-MATCH (xenon colored) bulbs in H4
and if you have the factory bi-xenons, you should just take out a bulb and look at what it is, it will be printed on the side of the bulb
and most likely it will be a D2S type bulb
you should still check though

also, why are you going for 8000k's?
are you doing this for more color or more light?
if its color there's no other way than to replace the bulb, but you'll lose light (lumens)
but if its more light you're after you should look into custom projector units and also a 50 watt or custom 75w boosted ballast and a pair of DL50's
5300 lumens vs ~3200 lumens for the d2s/d4s bulb types
the ballasts are pricy but its a LOT more light if you're at 75 watts, something like ~8000-9000 lumens
and if its a bixenon setup, you can adjust low beam output by playing around with the light shield in the projector
and when its time for the high beams, 9000+9000 lumens = 18000 lumens vs 3200+3200 lumens = 6400 lumens
or 3X as bright, or by light intensity, about ~9X as intense a light
so with a custom projector setup AND custom boosted ballasts, low beams will not blind incoming drivers if your cutoff is right, but if you do need to blind them, you'll proally permanently ruin their night vision
at 75 watts and a conical reflector, you can set newspaper on fire with your headlights at the right focal point

what are you guys talking about.... factory mini xenons are all D2R type xenon bulbs.... as others have said already, they are availiable from variety of sources, everyone from PIAA to ebay vendors sell them

When he started mentioning H series bulbs, I thought he was talking about the halogen bulbs labeled as "Xenon"...
Seems to me that the purpose of those xenon-like bulbs are to give the appearance of true xenon lamps. Why bother if you really do have xenons...?

nice S2k... Spoon bumper?
back on topic... on a 'showy' purpose car, you are right.. though my upper limit is 6 k, past 6k and i think it just looks too blue, personal opinion though... furthermore, if you drive alot on country roads without lights, 8 k can become too dark to see anything, yes you have the looks, but you will not get the lumens on the ground
