Key Operation?

Over on Motoringfile

Does the new MINI work like below? Specifically if you just stop your engine while still(for safety), can you steer the car or is the wheel locked?

When I had a 2006 BMW 325i loaner car for a while from the dealership, I got to play with the stop/start button convience feature.

I found that you could turn the engine off while the car is in motion. This was tested in a parking lot… and it surprised me tremendously. If someone reaches over and pushes that button while you are driving, not only will the car suddenly turn off, but the steering wheel lock will kick in too (if you try to turn the wheel)>

That’s pretty dangerous! I was surprised that they didn’t put in a safeguard that required the car to be completely motionless before the engine could be turned off.

Eh not that I'm aware of.. but thats kinda like stalling in that description.

Key is interesting..

Dealer had this set up for me when I first got it

Unlock button - unlocks driver door/gas cap
Unlock button twice - unlocks all door
Unlock button 3 times - opens all windows/roof

Key inside the key (The metal one) can close all windows when you stick it in and turn it to 3oclock.

Just wanted to stick this in here since it kinda related =P

The manual only mentions the steering wheel lock on after you eject the key. I guess that's another question, can you eject the key while it's still running?

Im pretty sure i read in the manual that to turn off the engine with comfert access system, your car needs to be at a stand still, and no im also pretty sure you cant take out your key while driving beacuse there is a magnet lock that keeps it in there, thats why you have to make sure its pushed in all the way.

That 3rd time- you have to hold it down until all the windows/roof are open, correct?

But with convenience, remember you don't need the key in there...
