Apparently you have never worked in QA!
People do stupid things all the time. We've spent our entire lives driving cars where the key had to be in a slot in the dash, now that it's changing people are likely to do all sorts of wierd things.

What happens if you drop the key out of your pocket while getting in and out? What if two people are in the car and both have a key, can the car "connect" or start off of either one? Does it keep a connection to the key, or does it only need it to start? What is the range of the key?

Heck, depending on the range of the RFID, you might just need to be standing nearby.

Don't tell my insurance company...

Its the range that could be the problem. from mini2

The key has to be inside the vehicle. You would have to go and sit next to him or give him the keys

I've tried it out, you can't start the car with the key outside the vehicle. The car warns you with a chime and a "No Key" symbol on the rev counter display. Also a nice message on the Nav screen (if you've got it)

Works for me if the doors open

this is someone standing right next to their door. So I just wonder... what is the farthest the key can be and still have the car start?

In my current car I have the plastic spare key which I always keep in my wallet. With the the new key fob which is round,is there something flat that will fit in a wallet as well?

My understanding is that triggers both of the front ejector seats.

If you have 2 remote keys then no, both are the same. The 2nd remote was part of an option ;pack in the UK, not sure what the other non remote key would be though.
