Can you start the car with your key in your pocket, or does it have to be in it's slot?

It can be either way...but remote use is a special option. The remote key feature (key-less go) is part of the convenience package...not sure if it's available seperately.

Isn't it also an ala carte option at $500? Factory I'm sure.

Fantastic - Thanks!!!

I did the lounge leather seats, with the cream white colorline, the wood dash and wheel, and chromeline interior. I hope it looks good, and this makes me feel much better about it, but who knows how it will turn out. I'll let you know in a couple months. Damn, can't believe I have to wait that long. Oh well, the snow will be here soon anyway - not Mini weather.

Thanks again. This site has been infinately more helpful than my dealer.

It is funny that you mentioned "Mini Weather". This is actually why I registered for this forum. I'm thinking about ordering a Mini in January, and would hope to own it for a number of years. My question is for any current or former Mini owners.....how do they handle in snow/sleet/ice/etc.?? Obviously I am going to put snow tires on, but I don't know how they typically fare in those kinds of conditions.

I live in NJ right now, but may be relocating out to Colorado at some point, and wanted to make sure I didn't end up buying a car that won't even be able to make it through a healthy snow storm.

Thanks for the info!!

Yes, that's correct, according to the U.S. price list.

There are a number of settings that can be stored in the memory of the comfort access keys.

That includes the temperature setting for the auto air con, headlight courtesy delay timing and whether daylight running lights are turned on or off. It also lets you set a standard audio level and speed-dependent volume levels.

It can also set your preference so that when you push up or down on the turn signal stem and release it, it can flash once, twice or three times while you complete a lane change.

In addition, it can also set 12- or 24-hour time for the clock and set units of measure for gas consumption, temperature and distance traveled.

All that is according to the R56 manual.

Are those settings only available via the comfort access package?

I thought the comfort access simply made it so the doors would open, and te ignition start, simply by having the key WITH you but not necessarily "out" or in the slot.

In other words, I thought the user options were built into the standard key, being able to use the key without taking it of your pocket were essentially all the comfort access package provided.

I may be wrong. I looked at the manual again and those settings are listed under "personal profile." And it does say those settings are stored with the remote in use. It doesn't go on and say anything about comfort access.

I'll check with someone who does have a car already and post back a more definitive answer.

Speaking of comfort access

While at the San Diego Car show years ago, we met a Caddy salesman who was seriously trying to sell an XLR to our trio of 25 somethings. Can't blame the guy for doing his thing. Anyway when he got to their version of this keyless-proximity-sloth-guaranteed-to-result-in-at-least-two-aggravated-phone-calls-to-a-dealer-in-the-course-of-your-ownership feature, I asked what happens if the guy with the key in his pocket got out (I think I said jumped out while the car was moving) while the driver was trying to continue on, or if the key was pitched out of the car. He gave me that deer in the headlights look. I hope the engineers gave the feature more thought than he had.

I think the best candidate for that feature is a pizza delivery guy or a Fed Ex courier.

Yea, if that's really it, it just fell off my list of stuff. I'd much rather save the money to put toward the JCW aero kit and ala carte sports suspension. I can't imagine being in such a rush that I can't take time to push the button on the key fob. :-) Even if it's raining.

Plus, I was thinking it kind of seems like another thing to have go wrong. I think the Sat Nav will provide plenty of opportunity by itself.

I'm still waiting to hear about/see how the iPod integrates with the system, particularly the SatNav display.

R56MCS - Can you post some pictures of the interior mood lighting at night time? How does it look in a reddish/orange? Also some pics of the Speedo/Console at night time with backlighting on (headlights on)

Thanks!

Any pics of the door handle with the little button on it? I know what they look like on other cars, just wondering how "obvious" it is on the new R56...

Also, if you can, could you try to get a shot from below the rear bumper, showing the exhaust/rear suspension parts....? I'm really interested to see what the changes are from the rear suspension back, since it appears they have simplified things greatly by moving the battery up front.

Thanks for volunteering your car for all of these pictures!!!
