ok, excuse my ignornace...i did a search and browsed all the topics and found nothing.

what do we know officially about the 07 coopers? Are they in fact going to be Twin Turbo? or just single? any other facts. im more interested in specs then pics. cause im on the verge of dumping $36k into a new mini and if there is a big spec diff, i would love to wait

This according to edmunds.com:
"The standard Cooper will receive a substantial bump in its horsepower from 115 to 150, while the Cooper S' new turbo engine will channel its 170 hp into a much more sophisticated package..."

What I have read elsewhere is it will be single turbo, about the same HP, but a Peugeot engine (instead of the current Tritec). Some body changes as well.

If Renault would import the Megane Cup 225, I would sell my MINI to buy one a a second. PSA Group (Renault, Peugeot, Citroen) make some pretty awesome cars in Europe, I wish they were here.

I echo this sentiment. I've owned 5 Peugeots - 84 505S, 86 505S, 89 Turbo wagon, 92 505DL wagon and 92 405mi16 and they have all been well made and comfortable. Never been let down. As far as i know the are all still on the road with 150 - 250k+ miles on them... Id buy one in a heartbeat if they were sold in the states!

My neighbor and friend (while I was living in Italy) has a ~'96 renault clio and we carpooled together. He beats the hell out it and drives through the Milan streets like it's a rally, rarily did any maintenance on his and it's still going strong. It's a 1.4 or 1.6. I wouldn't worry too much about the engine. Also, I drove a Renault Scenic on vacation in Spain last summer, though I didn't like the car the engine had lots of power.

My main question is fuel economy. The '06 MC has good gas mileage but I would expect PSA Group will be much better if we get a non-turbo model in the U.S. I'll check the specs on the Italian Renault Pegueot sites and see what their current 1.6s are getting in fuel economy and report back.

I'm on the fence to buy a '06 MC or a used one till '08 models are released.

Anyone know when in the past final specs were released for public consumption on past Coopers '02 to '06? I recall seeing some topics that the '07 specs may debut in July at some car show, do we usually get them that soon?

Since it seems the next generation MINI engine has again become French and/or from Renault, I thought I'd re-post what I had to say in comment 19 of this topic clearing up that issue a bit:

Now that's look at the new Prince engine. The engine was designed and engineered by BMW in Germany. BMW is partnering with Puegoet for help with logistics and economies of scale. BMW will be doing assembly of the next MINI's engine at Hams Hall in the UK. The initial blocks will comes from a PSA plant in Europe (I believe France). Puegoet will be building their own version of the engine in France.

Not just the engine block will be coming from France, but all the parts for the engine. The parts then get shipped to the UK for assembly at the BMW Hams Hall assembly plant.

According to my source at the current plant, engine components will be assembled from a variety of suppliers and the main portion (the block etc) will be coming from the PSA plant set-up to produce the joint venture BMW/PSA engine. Of course many components for both the car and the drivetrain will be coming from all over the world including France just as they do now.

I would guess that fuel economy would be substantially better with the turbo car since free horsepower would be supplying the boost. The design of the engine in regards to reduction of "parasitic" drag on the engine would also boost economy. I would not doubt that the horsepower is substantially underrated to simply maintain sales of the mini pending release of the 07.

Ok here's what I got.
The current PSA 1.6 ~110 HP in Peugeot 206 and Citroen C2 which are 3400 lbs cars are listed at ~32 city ~51 hwy ~42 combined. Very nice!

Hope they don't force the ~140 HP on us but that we get a 118, 140 and 170+ choices. The 140 should still be more efficient than the current MC.

So when are we going to get an '07 spec debut? Around when did they officially announce them for '02 to '06. Must resist buying.

Do those mpg figures apply to US spec cars ?

The Citroen C2 weighs 2321 lbs (1055kg), not 3400 lbs. The gallon in Europe (4.546 litres) is significantly larger than a US gallon (3.785 litres). So that 42 mpg combined would only be ~35 mpg (for US-sized gallons). I don't think the mpg ratings for the new engines will be all that different than the current ones; slightly better, maybe.

Didn't know there was a difference in US and European gallons, thx. Dunno where I got 3400 lbs for the C2 but I snagged it from one of their sites either GB or Italy, must have mis-referenced.

5 mpg better is nothing to scoff at, that's exactly how far I live from Hooters

I'm more concerned about the 1st year quality niggles. Otherwise I might wait....or get the new Miata.

Well, I do worry about 1st year production...however, mini cooper S w/ turbo just sounds too great to pass...I've been waiting for this to happen, thanks BMW!!

I've been wanting a turbo car for around $30k, and my girl is been banning the likes of Evo or Sti...I'm sure she won't say no to my beloved Mini.

The GTI is under $30k, but of course lacks the style and cool factor of the Mini.
