Hi All
Forgive the rambling, but want to give detailed event. 2011 R56 MCS 80627Mi.
Did a oil/filter, air, cabin service yesterday. The oil filter was very fiddly, and didn't want to thread. I took the intake pipe off to gain some view of the filter housing and was able to screw the top on. Put 1/4 Qt oil had left over, plus 4Qt. Started up and had rough idle, no CEL or warning lights. Was smooth when raised to 2K. Shut down and let oil drain down while rotating tires. Checked level - all good. I ran Bimmerlink scan for errors and 33FE came up. I cleared it and ran the engine, and idle was smooth. I got on forum and searched for rough idle and: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...k-removed.html. Yes, I had the oil fill cap off while running 5 min leak check in anticipation of adding oil. Idle later was smooth bc I put the cap back on. Now I know better.
Today took used oil to store and went home, about 2 mile trip. At a light, got oil can error in display. Scan showed 33FE and 3406. I ran sensor values on Bimmerlink and they were from ~25PSI idle to ~66PSI @2K RPM.
Before I do anything, I wanted to get opinions. I've changed the oil before without problems. Is this a coincidence? The only possibility I can think of what I might have done is somehow damaged the filter.
I had a similar issue but didn't get any codes or anything. Mine was eating oil filters. I always use Mann or Wix. The Mann was not making it, and I was able to get the Wix to work because the ends were plastic. After about the third oil change, I noticed the oil filter cap was actually broken. I put it on and it just didn't feel right with the filter. Started it and didn't sound right at all. My gauge usually reads about 50psi on startup. It was about 15psi. So I took the cap off again and the internals were broken. Bought a new cap and all has been well. So I would check that.
My Coolant Reservoir can't be moved away as far as shown in some videos, without busting the plastic T junction (ask me how I know).
I was only able to get one hand in there and spent more effort than should have been needed to put the cap on. It's been a year since I did it last. The Ultimate Mechanic's Machine.
I took the Intake Pipe off to see better and gain a little more access.
I had to hold the hose junction out of the way to start the cap threads. It was very fiddly, and I could only get one hand in there. In the process, the filter got loose. I was able to tighten it down, not knowing it was crooked.
Today I removed the Coolant Tank and it was way easier to install the new filter.
