What is it?
2007 R56 Mini Hatchback, not sport, automatic transmission
What is this thing? Little grey thing, looks almost like a valve cap. The screwdriver is pointing to it.
to it, it seems to attached to the air filter housing.

That is the end of the fuel rail. There is a pressure fitting and cap on the end:
