Oil filter getting destroyed

This is the second time this has happened. Any ideas why the spring would be shredding my oil filters? The last time was worse when I changed the oil at about 4k miles. I have been getting a rattling knock sound and it went away after I changed the oil last for about a week or two. Then it came back. So I suspected it was the vacuum pump, and since, I have ruled that out. The filter is my next suspect. So I removed it and I have only put about 1k miles on the new oil, and this is how it looks. Always use Mann oil filters.

suggest you use oil filters that have hard black plastic end-caps (mini oe, pureflux, etc) vs. one you have in picture

I thought so as well. But I have been using Mann the past 4 years of ownership with oil changed every 5k miles, and have never had this happen

What does it look like in the filter housing? Is there something in there that shouldn't be?

I don't think so. Looks normal to me. I will get another picture tonight. One of the only things I can think of is that I did the timing chain over the winter. It doesn't make sense, but is it possible it has more oil pressure which is making the spring more stiff against the filter? I took off and replaced the oil filter housing gaskets and all when I did the timing chain.

Just in case someone interprets this as if mini oe and purflux are different filters: the filter MINI sells/installs is made by Purflux (code L358A).

Same here (using MANN filter HU 711/51). I usually reach about 6k miles between changes. Once 9k miles. (N16 engine with about 90% freeway/highway long distance use, i.e. >1k miles at a time).

Didn't get a picture of it last night as it was getting late. I replaced the oil filter with a Wix filter since it has the plastic ends. The filter housing looks perfectly fine though. So does the spring. Nothing else inside of out of the ordinary. The knocking/rattling noise went away, but unfortunately came back this morning. Going to double check all my timing chain work tonight and this weekend. No idea where to go if that's not it. Thanks for the replies
