R56 Check engine light turned itself off
Check engine light turned itself off
2007 R56 standard, 121,000 miles.
Last week check engine light came on. I ignored it and drove my usual routine -- grocery, hardware, etc., and back home.
Today, wife and I drove to nearby town. I told her before we started about the check engine light so she wouldn't freak out -- started Cooper and no check engine light!! Nothing!! No warning DING DING, nothing. Dorve about 60 miles total; parked, shut down, restarted several times -- no check engine light.
So -- did Cooper fix himself?

My 09 Justa has been doing the same thing with a P115C code ever since I replaced the timing chain. It worried me at first, although there was almost no impact to the way it drove. I reset the timing, what seems like an un-Godly number of times, and replaced almost everything on the top end(except for the lifters). She drives good and gets almost 35mpg so I think I'm going to let it ride until it gives me a better excuse to do an engine swap.
That didn't last long. After ten days, the check engine light came back on.
On the same day, my wife fell, resulting in a compression fracture of L1 vertebra and fracture of right side pelvic ring. Kyphopathy procedure fixed the vertebra but no surgery for pelvic ring fracture -- 6-8 week to heal itself.
Have not had time to pull the codes, so, Cooper is parked until I figure this out. No way I can take it to a dealer -- 80 miles away -- must stay with wife.

Sorry to hear about the wife
I’ll repeat my last comment, without knowing the code, no way of knowing why it came and went, and then returned. Could be anything from a loose gas cap to a bad thermostat, or a faulty sensor somewhere. Hope you’re able to get some time to figure it out.

Hope your wife feels better soon, that's definitely more important than the car.
You'll need an OBD2 reader to pull the code and diagnose why the light came on. Many auto parts stores will loan you one for free, so maybe call and check.
If not, you can get one on Amazon for $20-30. Given your distance to the dealer you'd spend more on gas driving there and back.
