2009 R56 base. No display on speedo/radio LCD screen and the speedo does not light up unless I put the lights on. I don't get how those two are related.

I'll open up the radio and check the ribbon cable but I'm afraid I may need a new display or radio.

Anyone had this particular problem?

I have all audio function, I just need to guess as I press the buttons.

Interesting. It's like when the Three Stooges would turn on a faucet and flames would come out.

Question when the lights are off on an R56, are the speedometer and tach illuminated? My recall is that they are.

 

The digital readouts are illuminated. The ticks/numbers on scales and hands are not. They come on only when lights are turned on.
At least that's how it works on mine (2013 R56S)

Here is the picture I found that helps to understand what I was talking about.
You can see the time/date/fuel level on speedo and digital seed reading on tachometer are lit up.
The climate control readout is also always on. Everything else is off until the lights turned on.
