My r56 mini rebuild.

So this is my second post My first of which being in the 1st gear forum and I apologize that its not in the builds forum sectionthat I just found. So...long story short I bought a broke down r56 from a relative to help him recover some $. Ive pulled the engine and trans and have completely dissambled the engine to rebuild. The car needed a head gasket due to the water pipe being corroded and stop leak being used and etc. Etc. So far I've installed new main and rod bearings KING brand racing version completely cleaned the factory pistons and re-ringed with factory mahle ring sets. Ive cleaned the head and all components and awaiting timing set to come in to finish reassembly of this n14. Ive got at least 2k in parts to put into the car before it evens fires back up for the first time. Im excited to get on the road asap and start planning my future payment plans for mods lol. Anyway heres some pics of what I found when taking things apart and how they sit now.

Nice job saving this one! I just went through this whole process with my N14. It's quite an investment in time and money.

I have one concern for your build based on the last picture you posted. I'm assuming the last pic is your freshly re-ringed pistons re-installed in their bores. If so, your cylinder walls look awfully shiny (as did mine).

If my assumption is correct, it appears the cylinders were not honed prior to reinstalling pistons. I'm afraid your new rings won't seat properly and you'll have an oil-burning N14 that probably won't run well and certainly won't be healthy enough for future mods.

I don't mean to be critical. I'd just hate to see you make that kind of investment only to be disappointed in the result...Of course, if my assumption is wrong, disregard my comments.

I actually honed them myself as well. really shiny becuase of the oil soak to the cylinders to ensure a smooth slide in of the fresh rings. Thanks for the reply and the input of concern as it is taken with appreciation!

Lo

Love it, I wish I had the skills. If my R56 ever needs an engine rebuild and is still worth saving otherwise, I think I might see about signing up for an auto shop class at the local tech college.

it is an adventure for sure. So many differences from American cars which is all ive had experience with until now. What shocks me the most is how low the torque specs are.

oh ya have to be careful with aluminum. Things like spark plugs are hilarious— barely finger tight!
