Speedometer

Sorry if this has been discussed before, but I couldn't find it. I just purchased a 2007 Cooper S (Love It!). However, the LED display quits working once warmed up. I believe this to be an ambient temperature issue and not engine temp. regardless I am looking at replacing the speedometer assembly. I have seen references to ensuring the proper manufacturing number is checked. Not sure about what this quite means. I have searched and found year and model compatible speedometers but the version number is different. any clarification or advice out there?

I've researched a bit more and discovered I do not need the speedometer but the display the sets inside the speedometer. Of course that leads to another different question. There are two different types of displays. Is there any way to find out which one without taking the dash apart?
