I have a 2013 R56 (hatchback) with the third brake light in the same housing with the backup light which is mounted on the bumper. I've pulled the light and the bulbs are good but there is no power to the port for the third brake light on the connector. Both backup lights work properly and both the left and right brake lights and turn signals work properly. This is causing the "bulb of exterior lighting system failed" warning light to illuminate. I could jumper the third brake light to right brake light but the warning light would still be illuminated and I can't pass my state safety inspection with a warning light illuminated.
Has anyone else experienced this?
Where does the other end of the wiring harness terminate?
Where can I get a wiring diagram that would help me troubleshoot?
Any advice that the community could offer would be greatly appreciated.
I have an R53 and the solder joints where the power cable connected cracked. Reheating and adding a little extra solder made for a quick and cheap fix. I can’t imagine the part changed a ton between models.
You're talking about the middle, red light? I too had the same question because mine does not light up. I thought it was broken, but then googling revealed that it seems to be a rear fog light. And if your car doesn't have the fog light option, then it (correctly) does not work. Mine does not have the fog light option, so it makes sense that the light does not work, even though it is there. Anyway, that is about all I was able to figure out.
See this parts page that seems to identify the light as a "rear fog light." If you google "R56 mini cooper rear fog light", you'll see some similar examples.
Thus, your warning light may be about something else.
I'm not even really a MINI owner and I'm generally stupid about cars, so I could be all wrong. Feel free to correct me.
