283D Vanos code help

Looking for some advice. I have already read the other threads and need more insight.

Background: This car is a 2007 Base automatic. Installed a 2016 N16 countryman base motor. Kept all 2007 N12 electronics and ECU. Motors are basically the same. Motor had 16 miles and was totaled just off the dealership lot.

The motor is spotless inside. I got the car running about a year ago. Just recently got a check engine light and pulled several codes:

283D exhaust adaptation stop
2845 exhaust actuator movement stopped
288D exhaust camshaft to crankshaft correlation

I reset the codes and at idle, the live data is moving. As I rev up, the degrees are changing, then lock at 119-120 with no further movement. You can feel the engine idle struggling, then it’s better, but power loss at low end.

i pulled the exhaust solenoid and a little dirt. Switched out with a spare and same results.

I just pulled the valve cover and checked the cam timing and they are dead on. I was expecting to see one off a bit. Tensioner is tight and engine built in 2015.

I am about to remove and measure the chain, hoping someone can chime in with more advice while I do that.

Could the exhaust Vanos gear be bad? Could it be the Valvetronic motor in the back?

Thanks
Tim

Also, best guess chain is at 69mm. Can’t torque the adjuster as I don’t have a small in/lb torque wrench.

Follow-up:

i decided to change out the timing chain. Put my slightly used chain from another motor onto this one. I installed the longer tensioner. Reset the computer twice as code appeared again. Then the code went away. Data acquisition shows timing set-point and actual now tracking well. I believe It was the tensioner.

I’m having the same issue. Glad to hear you got it fixed. I replaced the timing chain with a Duralast kit, but. I’m not sure if something is wrong with the design of the kit of not so I’m in the process of removing it. I initially replied the tensioner with a OEM Mini tensioner thinking that would help. I changed the phasers gear on the exhaust, changed the cam sensors, changed the vanos valve solenoids and crank sensor.I hate I throw the old chain away to compare more closely. The plastic timing cassette was broken all up so i just throw everything away. Hopefully after I replace the kit again it fixes it.
