Normal Operating Temp?

Hey all,

I have had my 2011 Clubman JCW (N14 engine) for several months now and I very much love this little rocket! I have noticed one thing that I would like to confirm is normal. My car has the optional gauge pods on either side of the speedo with the L/H side reading temperature (coolant I assume) and the R/H side reading engine output %. The temperature is what I have noted. Once warmed up the temp gauge will hover around 105C rising to 110C on occasion. This is independent of outside temperature or cruising speed as well. (it was 35F outside during the drive in today for example) Normally this would not give me too much pause but the gauge redlines at 115C so it is constantly sitting near the top end of the gauge. I have also noted that having the car in SPORT mode has no effect at all on temperature reading.

So my question is, is my car acting normally or is there something I should be investigating?

FYI - I have a 2009 MCS and my coolant temperature is the same. Specifically,

a) normal engine temp is maintained between 105C/221F and 110C/230F

b) Under high load (much throttle & high revs), coolant temperature is reduced by ECU to 82C/180F. Then it will go back to "normal temp" once back to normal load.

Good luck,

My 09 clubby s reads on scanguage 220 to 222 Fahrenheit which is right around 105 Celsius if I’m not mistaken. I only drive in sport mode, I like the way the steering and boost feels vs regular mode.

Thanks guys, that makes me feel better. I figured it was normal but it is good to have additional opinions/experience. They really didn't design that gauge that well in my opinion. Normally you have the normal value in the center of a gauge, not very near the top.

Before changing the thermostat housing (due to a broken temp sensor), my base Cooper LCI had similar operating temperatures. With the new housing (and possibly new software flashed by BMW?) I have noticed that the car runs about 10 to 15 degrees C cooler than before.

Regarding the "red" at 115C: I think that is the temperature at which the fan comes on.
