Can I Re-Use Windshield Top Trim Seal?

After a rock hit my roof, the paint has started flaking in that area (photo: http://l.mashby.com/jc5B5y). Since it's $1000 to have it professionally fixed, I wanted to do a rough prime and paint to prevent any further damage. I don't expect it to look that great, it's just a band-aid fix for now until I can afford to have it done properly.

My Questions
My plan is to pull back the Windshield Top Trim Seal so that I paint to the edge of the roof. Can this part be re-insterted? If not, how hard is it to replace?

Thanks in advance!

Most window places like Safelite glass replace that strip and seal it in with there betalink type caulk ( aka window caulk) to put in a new windshield. if you just pull back the top flap part you could do it, But on the whole, seal being moved, it would have to be replaced with the windshield. I have seen them replace several of windshields.

Good luck and let us know how it goes. Pull the top overlapping rubber and use painter tape and it might hold it.

Band-aid for me would be a vinyl stripe or decal. Easy cheap fast!

Thanks guys. I do need to replace the windshield too maybe I can figure out a way to time it where I can remove it to prep for the installer.

Thanks for the feedback!

Yep, I had the top plastic on my R52 replaced and the safelite pulled the window and the dealership replaced the upper plastic cap on the convertible, then safelite put the window back in at the same place.
