2011 Cooper S Purchase?

Looked at a 2011 Cooper S yesterday with 59k miles and automatic. When first started and running with the hood open it seemed to make a ticking noise toward the back of the engine, not sure if this is normal or anything to be worried about if I purchase the car. It drove nice and seemed to have plenty of power and shifted without any hesitation. The car was just washed so had some water on it as well but the owner said it had made the noise since he bought it a couple months ago(package deal with another car)

Thanks for any insight on the noise

Kerwin

Might be the chain tensioner you're hearing. Make sure the oil level is correct, low oil
level is a death sentence for the timing chain and related parts.

He just had the oil changed so wouldn't think it was low, however I didn't check either. If the chain tensioner is the issue, once damaged it needs to be changed? Sounds like a time consuming job

the n18 engine makes a ticking sound. Perfectly normal. I have a 2011 S and have compared my engine to other n18's and they all sound the same. I believe it is due the direct injection. The timing chain issue is more of a problem with the n14 engine 2007-2010.

That makes me feel better about talking to him again about getting the car. Any other items I should look for?

Thanks for the info, very helpful

Get a pre purchase inspection done by a mechanic. Get the vin and try to get the maintenance history from a mini dealer.

I have a 2011 mcs. And it has a tick which Is normal. If the noise was the chain it would be pretty easy to tell because the noise will be very distinct on the pass side of the motor.

Ticking normal, just fuel injectors.

Keep in mind the 2011 N18 still had an issue with the high pressure fuel pump. Some people have gotten it warrantied but I wouldn't bank on it. Part costs $1k when it dies.

I got a letter from MINI about a month ago. Fuel pump is now covered for 2011's
