Just another pop/burble question...

I have started similar threads inquiring about getting the most pop/burble (I actually like the burble more) and aggressive sounding exhaust out of my '13 MCS. I went so far as dealer installing the JCW Tuning Kit which was a colossal waste of money IMO.

I took a 2012 and 2013 JCW hardtop out for a test drive yesterday, and the '12 burbled even when not in sport.

Also, does anyone know for sure when the N18 engine was introduced in the JCW? Was it just in 2013 or would there be any 2012s with it dependent on when built?

According to RealOEM JCWs produced between 01/2012 and 06/2012 could be either N14 or n18. They may have been sold as 2012's, or 2013's I'm not sure. my 2013 is 01/2013 production date and sold as a 2013 so those might have been sold as 2012.

You cannot hear anything but road noise. I was just playing with the person who posted, however, I just love when people pipe in and give their opinions. Perhaps maybe, just maybe you could give an opinion that actually addresses the thread? Otherwise, your comment is all for naught.

I was the first response! Not to discount the video (I enjoyed it) but the information I posted is arguably more relevant.

One of my 12 MCS was produced Nov 7 2011 and its a N18
If you want pops and burbles a Manic tune will do that for you, they can even give you flames if you like.

It is the JCW that did not have the N18 engine until 2013 from my understanding. I do not want to do an aftermarket tune because:
1. I spent $2300 on the JCW Tuning kit with dealer installed ECU;
2. I have the extended 100k warranty that is not up until 2019.

Perhaps I can bring my Mini back to the dealer and have them tweak the ECU? I would think my car should sound very similar to a FJCW, no?

Finally...figured out why my car was not burbling! At the same time I installed the JCW Tuning kit, I had the resonator removed and straight pipe installed by (what I now realize) was a unscrupulous exhaust shop.

The straight pipe they used to replace the resonator was too small. Instead of using the correct diameter pipe that went on the OUTSIDE of the existing pipe, they put a smaller one INSIDE the existing pipe. Apparently, this restricted the airflow just enough that my car would not burble and I was not getting the extra hp and performance out of the JCW Tuning kit that I spent over 2k on!

To say that I am pissed off these losers at the exhaust shop did what they did, which ended up causing me additional expense to the tune of $250, is a gross understatement!

Lesson be learned...if you are going to do a resonator delete, double-check to make sure the correct pipe was used.

I couldn't be more thrilled with my lil Pepper Jack now! He is noticeably quicker, exhaust has a nice tone and he burbles and subtly pops (no bangs-which I find annoying) like crazy!

Glad you were able to get it resolved and you're happy with the car now!

I find it amazing how the sound of the tuning kit exhaust varies so much by each install. I really didn't like the sound out of my tuning kit since all I heard was burble resonating throughout the cabin but it's now settled in nicely and I love it.

My 2011 MCS sometimes pops, sometimes burbles, but not consistently. I get some really good "crackles" at times, and some really cool pops. Even some bangs now and then. It's hard to replicate. I can drive all the way home, with proper pops, burbles, and bangs all the way there. Then, when I am in my driveway, sometimes I can replicate those just by revving to 2500k or so, and letting off. Other times, I get nothing. Always in Sport mode. Sport button is the third thing I push, after my clutch pedal and start button. What determines burbles, pops, and bangs besides the Sport button on a 2011 MCS? I am at a loss here. I know that I don't get any sexy noises from my exhaust until fully warmed up. But even when fully warmed up, I sometimes get nothing. Anyone?

This is actually programmed into your car by MINI and only works when the sport button is pushed. It releases a few drops of fuel into the exhaust system and they'll create your pops and bangs. This was done in the cars from MY2011+ to replicate what used to happen with the older R53 cooper s models.

All this talk of pops and burbles... my car is soooo subtle with its exhaust. I hardly ever run the car not in Sport mode, and I almost never hear any pops and burbles. I have to listen very carefully to hear anything. They are there, but seem very quiet, being drowned out by the other noises of the car and driving.

Yes, I know how it's supposed to work. Every time I start the car, I push the sport button, and it lights up, and gives me notification on the tach display. The issue is that even when fully warmed up, I don't consistently have pops and burbles. For example, I downshift for a turn, get a couple healthy pops, and other cool noises, as well as pops/burbles when I upshift down the straightaway. Downshift for the next turn, no pops, nothing. Same when I go back up through the gears. Then, all back to normal pops and burbles. It really comes and goes. Anyone else? Is this normal? Just another MINI quirk?

Happens to me too, I don't know why it goes away but if I continue driving it'll come back. Wish it would just stay on!

Glad I am not the only one. Just odd how it cuts out, then comes back. Guess it's just another "quirk".
