what's an '08 S with a blown engine worth?

After doing my due diligence regarding replacement parts, I can't see keeping my wife's '08 S with the blown engine (ate a spark plug, scored walls, had a likely cracked head- It's done). Cost to fix vs. value of the car doesn't work out.

It's still a nice looking car, with the champagne metallic color and automatic transmission. If it was a nice BRG color and a standard tranny, I'd fix it. But it's not, so...

I'm going to Craigslist it, but was wondering if anyone knew what a good price to ask would be.

I'd get the blue book value and subtract the cost of the engine plus labor. Might be best to sell it in parts to be honest.

Sounds like its worth about 4500-5000 with 85K miles (guesstimate)
so blown engine price is probably 2 grand tops.

what ever you can get someone to stroke a check for and not a penny more ....

in other words

unless you find someone in need of a body with no engine ......

good luck .... value ZIP except as scrap metal

sorry to be harsh ... but this is truth

part it out maybe???????? Takes time and effort but you may recover some $$

I've got the same issue with my '07 MCS. The numbers they are quoting are about right. So I have opted for parting it out as it's the only way I can get at least some of the money back. Sorry for your loss

buying a block and head (separate) is cheap. swap the good parts and replaced as needed. it should cost you less than 1k with everything said and done. you can do the work on the weekends. or send me the engine i can rebuild it for you, for a small fee

again, without taking the head off, you dont know the extent of the damage other than word of mouth and some borescopes pix which don't tell much. in my opinion

When I bought my 08 base model there was a good possibility it had a bad motor. It had 120K on it and I paid $1000 for it. My son works for a salvage yard and his boss was willing to pay $1200 for the car if I decided it was not worth fixing.

That additionally confirms that the salvage value is worth more than twice the 1200 offer. Scrap steel isn't going for much so he will break it for the parts then crush the remainder. Sad isn't it

Thanks for the input! I'll Craigslist the car and see what I can get for it. Time and schedules don't allow for me parting the car. If I can't sell it for what i want, it'll give me the excuse to tear into it at my leisure, and see the extent of the damage.

Best scenario is that I can fix the car, and sell it to get an '06 with a standard transmission.

It's interesting how many of the pre-07 cars you find on Craigslist with high miles for sale, and how many of the 07-08's you can find with blown engines. Also, the S models I see for sale have lower miles compared to the Justas.
