R56 Yellow Engine Warning in Drive
Yellow Engine Warning in Drive
I know it can be any number of things; going to take her in Wednesday - wanted to sound out the board so I don't get hosed. Situation:
Cranks as normal - no unusual engine noise in park.
Yellow blinking engine warning after shifting to drive. Engine running rougher. Shift back to park, shut her off.
Start again - no yellow engine warning in park - solid yellow engine warning, rough idle when shifting to drive. Shift to park, idle normalizes, shut her off.
I do not have the correct code reader - my basic OBDII not compatible.
Any ideas or areas to concentrate on very much appreciated - thank you!

take it to autozone for a reading. as you said it could be a number of things. You can test the coil packs though. turn the car on and start unplugging and plugging each coil and notice if the engine behaves differently. also, some people reported a VANOS issue too. but with out a reading, it is a guessing game.
If you cannot get a basic code reader to read the codes, it may take a couple times. The actron units those local autoshops sell for some reason take a couple times to communicate. That's what it did on mine. If you still have issues I would get the scan tool and give it a shot.

Thanks everyone - in the shop now - we have a very good independent Mini shop here; having him go through the whole car - good thing I did. Pieces of timing chain guides broken off, some oil seepage to plugs, couple of Vanos issues, coil replacement. Time to get it all done - 2200.00 prob, but don't want a kaput engine.
Also he let me know there is an FRM free replacement for R56 2007 + with less than 120,000 miles. Will post the documentation when I have it. Has to be done at the dealer, though.

All buttoned up.
New timing chain.
2 new timing solenoids
4 new coils
New valve cover gasket
New RF parking light
New bolts as needed for camshaft, crankshaft pulley, and timing rail.
New oil pan gasket and oil change.
$2200.00. I wasn't looking to spend that kind of money but it seems reasonable.

Thanks for the update. Yea, it an add up.

Well, my wife drives it most of the time so I have to know it's in shape.
Of course it got sick while we are about to close on a new house and bleeding cash everywhere.

I could have done everything but the timing chain myself and saved $, I suppose - but I have 0 time these days.
2200.00 seemed fair for what was done.
