R56 How long can I go without Tming Chain guide rail?
How long can I go without Tming Chain guide rail?
I recently replaced my valve cover for a stuck PVC, and while the cover was off, I noticed I was missing most/all of my timing chain guide (top)... well, except a little stub of plastic and the remaining metal bracket that used to support the plastic guide.
Anyway, found 'most' of the plastic pieces down in the bottom of the timing chain housing and a few parts up next to the valves/cams. I obviously removed all that I could find, but I'm sure there are more pieces down in the oil pan somewhere.
Anyway, my question is how long can I drive without that top rail? (assuming those remaining broken plastic pieces are not causing any issues)
What is the actual function of that guide rail? and is it dangerous to drive without it on there.
Of course now that I know it's gone, I'm conscious about the engine noises and rattles, but I honestly don't hear anything 'odd' coming from the engine bay. And I DO want to get it replaced.... but I wasn't sure what if any damage it could cause by not having it on there.
Side note: The timing chain/tensioner etc... and all associated components were replaced at the dealer about 62k ago (at around 60k miles), but when I called the dealer about it that did it says it's out of warranty and it's just time to do it again. But for the quoted $1800, I don't think I'll be going back there.
Anyway, how long can I wait to get this fixed?
Thanks!
