ID of under bonnet part ...

Can someone tell me what the arrowed part is in the photo below? It appears to have an electrical socket in it (for a sensor?).

I've been looking for a catalog of R56 parts diagrams online, but drawn a blank - is the Bentley manual the recommended resource?

Many thanks!

Is it on your car? Go to realOEM and put your VIN (or serial number or whatever it is called, the last 7 digits of your VIN) in. It will show you diagrams for your specific car. Then go through all the pictures and find that part.

I also have that unconnected sensor in my coolant system hose, but don't see it on http://www.realoem.com

Thanks, James - I'll try that. Yes, it is on my car.

I can't find it on the diagrams at realoem, looking forwards and backwards on the coolant system diagrams. Is it indeed part of the coolant system?

I guess that it's a coolant temperature test sensor.

It's in the coolant pipe that goes from the thermostat to the radiator top connection.

Makes sense ... so is the socket only used for diagnostic equipment, I wonder? Or is this used for the accessory coolant temperature gauge pod, if fitted?

That is the metal elbow piece with your coolant temperature sensor. Do you have a new thermostat? The new thermostat comes with the CTS attached (as you can see here by the bleed screw), rendering that sensor in the elbow useless. That sensor in the metal elbow is prone to leaking at the o-ring so if you have the updated thermostat and it begins to leak you can plug with permanently with some RTV.

Thanks for the info - very useful. I'm still familiarising myself with the car, so don't know if I have the new thermostat, but I guess I must

I used to use you guys for parts when I had my 911

@PelicanParts.com thanks for that.

See photo of mine, it has the temp sensor in the thermostat housing - the assembly line must have run out of the straight through coolant hose so placed the additional temp sensor elbow in the hose.

Now, if I knew the resistance curve for this sensor I could use my multimeter to measure the temperature.

Happy to help. Just take a look at the thermostat and if you see a sensor by the hex screw you have the new one. No need to replace it until it comes time. Glad we were able to help you with your 911 and if you ever need help with your MINI be sure to let me know.

You're very welcome. If you want the correct replacement hose for that section just let me know.
