What does it really cost to rebuild an N14

3-15-2016
What does it really cost to rebuild an engine (as opposed to buying a refurb from Mini)?

Does anyone have a sample of costs and installed parts? I have a goal and a target budget, but of course I have to stay on the conservative side of "a perfect world."

Thanks,
DR

Mine was replaced in the dealer under extended warranty. Cost about $9000 (including parts and labor).

It can be around 3,500 used whole engine or less to about $7600 for a new engine. w/ 500.00 core.

There's all kinds of "rebuilt" engines out there! What parts are you considering, or worried about, and what is the final usage --- daily driver, track, sleeper, all of these? Then there's labor costs --- is it to be a DIY job, good friend (great way to lose a good friend), indy shop, Mini dealer?

Then, do you already have the engine that wants to be rebuilt? If so, do you know why it wants rebuilding? And, a DIY job requires lotsa special tools, plus a variety of tools unique to European cars --- metric sizes and bolt-head fittings.

The RealOem site has prices for all their listed items. Nowhere near accurate for dealers (who charge more), but maybe closer to aftermarket. This should discourage you from a DIY job, unless you're really determined, and have previous engine rebuilding experience.

Without knowing all the above, I wouldn't even attempt giving you an estimate. Just be advised, a DIY job is not for the faint-of-heart, and is bound to destroy your budget.
