Post up after the HPFP change, that will at least knock down one cause.

alright guys, so I took the mini to the dealer today again. They told me that the P2188 is being caused because the car is getting coolant mixed with oil. I guess you guys know what that leads to. The car has overheated one or two times. It keeps getting really hot in that engine because the oil is not doing its job its becoming very watery. If i want to start trying to fix it its going to cost me a lot since we done really know if the oil pump is also doing its job. long story short I need to get another motor. I hate to let it go but it seems like ill be letting the cooper sit in the driveway for sometime until i can fix it.

I don't think i would go as far and say you need a new motor! i would be looking at you're hand gasket before saying you need a new motor. and a few other things before throwing in the towel just yet!! i work for mini, so ill give you a little dealer inside secret. now this don't go for all shops and dealers. Some time it's easier to put a new motor in then it is to troubleshoot . Now take that at face value..
if you sad its over heated a few time's, that would make me think its a head-gasket! .. under normal conditions, coolant mixed with oil is a head gasket it.. did you have to fill you're coolant much?!>! wish i was able to look at it in person would be able to help a lot more... :(

Over how many miles have you noticed the overheating do to the mixing of coolant and oil? When coolant mixes with oil is destroys the ability to lubricate the engine which I'm sure you know, if you need something to sway your decision in either direction perform a leak-down test as this will at least tell you how well the rings are sealing. I would at the very least have the head removed and have a look, but I'm concerned about your crankshaft bearings.

It really depends on how far you have driven your Mini with the coolant mixed with the oil, which is caused by the gasket on the oil filter housing that seals both oil and coolant channels together. Yet one of many **** poor designs!

So this has been an issue that I've had for about couple of months, now I just found out today about the coolant-oil mixed. I changed the coolant thermostat housing a few months ago as well didn't see anything strange. The mini has been to the shop 4 times in the past 4 months 3 times to the mini dealer and once to Import Autohaus - Bosch Car Service(another shop). Until today they never found that the mini was having this issue they diagnosed other things. I cant really tell how long, it has been running like this.

The coolant I had to refill every other week so it wouldn't overheat.

Mini been running very sluggish with not much power for 2 months or so.

I'm not sure how to do a "leak-down test". I will do some research.

How complicated is it to remove the head? I will try and post a bunch of pics sometime soon, been kinda cold and don't have a garage to work on.

thank you guys for taking your time to help out.

It's possible that the overheating caused the oil filter housing gasket to fail.

Well it does look like I was on to something when I said I would check to see if water is getting into the oil (coolant).

Sorry to hear the bad news Ninopr.

Fourth I would start using Mann filters and use full synthetic oil and start doing oil changes every 1500 miles until the engine oil begins to actually drain clean, it has taken me about four changes to clean out the engine really good. Fifth I would check that water is not getting into the oil, sixth have the pcv system checked out as well.

I agree, I'd perform a leak down test. Check out this HERE to help with a leak down test.

Been taking everything apart and here's a look on my valves. Will be taking the cylinder cover off here pretty soon, just waiting on timing chain removal kit .

Yea , they have some coating , but not near what mine looked like. On the one pic looks like moisture or maybe a leaky valve steam , can really tell.

At first look they look good, i almost wounder if you have a bad compression ring >

takeing out the pistons are not so easy when the block sites in the car,

i would get some sea foam and a brass brush and clean up the block and head...
