Brake Wear Light Won't Turn Off

Hi everyone,

Last month, i replaced front/rear brake pads and rotors for the mini, and neglected to change the wear sensors for F/R because i forgot to order them. I checked the sensors and they looked damaged but reinstalled anyways. As expected, the warning lights remained on.

fast forward to today, the brake pad sensors finally came in, and i installed both today. Connections are perfect and snapped in correctly on both ends. I tried 2 methods of clearing the brake pad wear indicator on the dash with no luck.

do i have something else wrong that i'm not considering?

1. i turned ignition on, held both buttons on the tac until it cycled. clicked the BC button until the front and rear brake pad indicator and held BC again to reset each. Both are now at 65,000km for each. After that was done, the red brake light is still on in the tac.

2. held the trip odometer for 10 secs, and then cycled through the options with BC until i got the brake pads and the interval was reset anyways even though they matched the first option above. after it was done, the red brake light still remains on.

Any idea what else is wrong? I don't live by the bmw/mini dealer so it will be difficult to get the car in.

Wild guess --- maybe the reset process is similar to the TPMS system --- you gotta drive it a bit before it resets.

Be sure to let us know how you get it reset, I'm getting ready to do my front brakes.

Should be instant. I think either they did not snap into the male / female two pin connection or you have a break in the connection under the body wiring.

when I jumped them out on my 7-S the light went out immediately
a properly placed new sensor should react the same way ... if you know how the sensors work .... all you are doing is closing an open circuit . . .

( btw a GEN1 DOES require a procedure)

So if yours did NOT go out I relate something I had
hanging in my office when I was a computer programmer

"If you are sure everything is right

and the program does not work

something you are sure of

is wrong."

MY suggestion?

Jump 'em out ..... any car guy wants to check his pad wear himself!

{computer programmer .... is that a valid job description today?}

Might take a look at the brake tech articles here and see if something might help you pin point the issue.

Hi everyone, thanks so much for all the rapid reply!

Im happy to say the light and warning indicator has now stopped. Oldbrokenwind was correct in that the car required to be driven a bit more in order for the program to identify that the issue was resolved.
