trying to determine this leak? with pictures

finally getting some good weather in the east coast. it is time to figure out my Mini. Off to the basics i.e. spark plus, coils, cai, and etc.

I was doing oil change too and saw a leak. seems like dirty something maybe mixture of oil. Anyone have an idea where the source could be?

Could be valve cover gasket, oil filter housing, heat exchanger gaskets or oil feed line to turbo. All the areas listed are known to leak before 50k miles, just replaced my oil filter housing gasket last Wednesday at 59k miles. It has to be one of those, could you take some more pictures above the transmission all the way up to the valve cover? I put my money on oil filter housing because you would have seen the oil feed line to turbo leaking.

Work your way uphill. Try to find the point of origin, or at least the general area it might be coming from. Get a telescoping mirror and a flashlight. Try to isolate a side its coming from, front, rear, driver, passenger

+1 on velvet cows

Your looking at the end result there in your pic. You need to wash off everything and then drive around for a few days and start looking upstream. You may be able to tell if it's a sure sign starting point that haven't been blown around by the wind or the fan or gravity

You'll have to go with all the usual suspects already mentioned.
