2007 with rodent chewed wiring

Hi, yes this is as strange as the subject sounds. Got a check engine light today and idle seemed to abnormally fluctuate. Code reader said P0013 and then I find this under the hood. Vehicle was smoking a bit as I pulled in the driveway this evening. So I can't find wiring harnesses of any kind for sale online and I'm not even sure which harness I would be replacing. Any ideas before I call the dealer?

Thanks
Aaron

If that was my car and the only damage, I'd probably just splice in some new wire and solder. Do some research here realoem.com to see if that wire is available as a self contained part.

Minnie's right. Looks like a favorable mess for a quick splicing. That one cable looks like it's shielded so you need to splice the center conductor, tape it off then slide the shielding together as close as you can get it and solder it back together. A little gap in the shielding won't hurt anything.

To preclude mice from taking your MINI out for lunch again, a good self resetting mouse trap is what you need. Here's a link to a page, with pictures, on how to build one out of stuff you've already got...probably.

Sorry about your wires as I suffered the same problem.

As silly as this may sound, I found some help on-line from a company that sells a small strobe unit that helps keep mice and rats away from the wires under the bonnet.

Company is called "Rid a Rat" and it really works! Of course I had to wash everything in the engine compartment with "Pine Sol" to rid any smells the little guys may have left so they won't want to come back again.

Then I placed a mesh bag of " Moth ***** " under the Bonnet. Only leave the moth ***** in the engine compartment when the car is parked !

So, along with the flashing unit, I no longer have any Rat or Mice problems !

I bought the self contained smaller unit that runs on AA batteries, Model RC-4.

Call your insurance company!

This happened a few years ago to my car. The dealer suggested it is covered by most insurance policies. Sure enough, I just paid the deductible and they covered the rest. I think the total cost was about $2000 to replace the wiring harness in my Scion.

I don't think there is any foolproof way to keep it from happening again. I bought some of those ultrasonic noise makers for the garage. I still see mice though. Mostly I just put out poison along the walls in places where larger animals like cats and dogs can't get to it. Sometimes I find a small pile of the pellets on top of the strut towers under the hood of our Minis.

The damage doesn't look too bad. You can buy new pins for the connector, little pieces of wire and heat shrink tubing and easily fix it yourself. Probably be under $20.

I had to rewire wire my reverse lights when I changed over to the JCW aerokit bumper and bought new pins and the correct connector at the dealer for about $2 each.

+1 Call your insurance company. Had rodent damage before and it was covered. Check other locations and have the car put on the rack and inspect the engine bay. Look near the wheel wheels and near the ECU, that's where they store nuts and seeds. Also you might find a mess on the valve cover and sometimes they chew the insulation under the hood if you have it.
