The Case of the Unusual Bonnet Emblem

Hi there, fellow MINI owners! I'm a first time poster, but a long-time reader. I bought my 2007 MC two years ago and this forum has been so helpful to me from day one, so thank you for that!

When I was buying the car, I focused mostly on the interior (which was mostly pristine) and not too heavily on the exterior. A broken antenna (replaced almost immediately with the stubby one), cracked A Pillar trim on the driver's side (Not yet replaced), cracking and faded bonnet stripes (replaced two weeks ago myself thanks to StripeMyMini.com), and a chipped and heavily faded front emblem were among the biggest issues.

This past weekend I FINALLY got around to replacing the bonnet emblem (along with installing the JCW Grille... thanks to ECS Tuning for the great prices and quick shipping). As with any project, I read up extensively on the steps involved for both repairs. I decided to do the emblem first and prepared myself with any tools I might need; a hair dryer, dental floss, Goo Gone, and some isopropyl alcohol. First, I tried pulling up on one side to see if there was one that might be easier to start on, and lo and behold without much force the emblem came off on it's own! The pilot holes were there but the guide poles I expected to be there were not! Additionally, I realized that the emblem itself was distinctly different from the new one... metal instead of plastic, raised MINI lettering, no band around the MINI wordmark, etc. I looked around online a bit after finishing up both projects but haven't been able to find anything online about this mysterious emblem or find any real alternatives to the stock one that MINI sells. Adding to my intrigue is that the boot emblem is identical to the new one, not the old one.

My initial thought was that the PO replaced it at some point, but as you can probably tell from my list above, he wasn't the most attentive or loving MINI owner in the world. Anyways, the good news is the repairs couldn't have been easier and i'm so happy with how the car looks now!

I've attached some pictures of the emblem... Any ideas where emblem might have come from or anyone out there with a similar one? I probably shouldn't be as curious as I am, but it's definitely got me puzzled...

Anyways, thanks for reading! Cheers!

Mini has done much cost cutting over the years....
Metal items become plastic, and styles change....
I suspect, that they just attached the emblems that they had at the time....this actually drives mechanic crazy since many gen1 parts are on some gen2 cars and vise-versa from the 2 years the gen1 cabrio was built next to the gen2 hardtop....and I suspect if I took my r53 emblem off...it would be the same.
As a 2007, you will just see the current replacements.... Not the original parts that are being sold...
