vacuum leak, error P1497

Hello gang,

I have an R56 2007 Mini Cooper S that's recently started to show the P1497 CEL.

Besides the code, the car's idle becomes bouncy at times and the engine is making what seems to be a whistling sound from the top right corner (when looking at the engine from the front of the car).

How may I exactly determine whether it's the valve cover or other part that needs replacement?

Thank you!

Hello,
I think this is probably a bad valve cover/cylinder head cover. Mini integrated the pcv into the valve cover and that is the part that causes the leak.

Hello guys,

I have a 2009 mcs w/ 169K miles. When I had the P1497, I resolved it by replacing valve-cover and the pcv hose that goes from rear-passenger side of valve cover to bottom of intake.

Good luck,

W

Might not be the valve cover / oil separator that has failed. In my case the hose from the valve cover had simply come loose as the clip mechanism had broken. The vacuum side hoses are notorious for cracking too, they are a sort of serrated hard plastic that can become brittle and crack. Its fiddly to check that as the hose runs down and under the inlet manifold.
