Coolant leak

So i have a 2007 MCS with about 56,000 miles. Over the last couple weeks i have been having to top my coolant off pretty regularly. Finally yesterday i noticed some dripping under my car and popped the hood to check the coolant and noticed that on the driver side of the engine behind the coolant resevior there was coolant dripping on to the transmission and then to the ground. i checked the resevior and it is not leaking. I'm not very engine savey but to me it looks like it's coming from the area where the coolant hose enters the engine. I'm thinking it's the thermostate housing leaking. the car is not overheating and i'm having to fill the resevior about every 2-3 days. Also it only leaks when the car is hot after it's run for a while. when it's sat for a while or on a short drive it does not seem to leak. what do you guys think?

Same here. I actually just got my Mini Cooper back JUST TODAY. my thermostat housing malfunctioned. When we ran the diagnostic the code that showed up was P0599. Looked it up and sure enough it was the housing module. Full disclosure, I do have a warranty so I had to pay a small deductible, the total cost of the repair at my local mini dealer was about $850 with parts and labor. Hope this helps!

Check out how to change it yourself on this site, you'll save a heap of money and also don't buy it from the dealer much cheaper online. That way your not rewarding BMW for engineering parts that regular fail and make a profit from it.

Thanks for the advice. i looked up a thread on how to do it myself and it seemed pretty easy. it looks like the part goes for around 120 online. I never take my car to the dealer, its way to exspensive. i have a local shop i go to, so ill price them and then decide if it's worth it to do it myself.

Sorry to hear that jordan. At least there parts and labor are guaranteed. Best of luck to you and your mini!

No i took it to a local mini shop. i know the part is only 120 but i dont have much mechanical knowledge otherwise i would attempt it myself. This is the first major repair i've had to do and considering it's a 07 i'm taking that as a postive. knock on wood.

Hello everyone,

Kinda going to hijack this thread vs. start a new one.

I have a 2010 justa and recently noticed that the coolant is low. After filling, it would be under the min. line the next day or two days. Is this a common mini problem? Would it be covered under the 50,000 mile warranty? I am about 40-50 miles away for that.

Thanks for any advice / help!

I'd imagine that it would be covered. Are you saying that you're 40-50 away from the warranty expiring or 40-50 miles away from the dealer?

If it's the former, then it might be a good idea to get the problem (if there is in fact one) documented with the dealer.

The 50,000 mile factory warranty expires in 40-50 miles. I'm only about 5 miles from a dealer.

i'd get it checked out before your warranty is up. that seems a litle to often to be topping it up. before my thermostat went out i was topping mine up about once a month and it was only a little bit.
