Chain, but the chains are less reliable on the average than most other engines with timing chains. The chains can stretch, due to a variety of reasons. The plastic chain guides can break. The tensioners can get blocked with deposits from old worn-out oil, or can not build enough pressure if the oil level is low.

Unfortunately, this isn't the 150,000 mile chain system that you see in some other cars. (Especially those with much shorter chains.)
