Easier to perform an oil change on the R56 non S since there aren't any tubing from the turbo or coolant tank in the way to gain access to the oil filter housing. For S vehicles, coolant tank has to be moved out of the way to gain access and I do that by using a long 3/8" extension connected to the 27mm socket.

 

Also, make sure to replace the copper crush washer on the pan drain plug. It comes with the filter. Otherwise you will have a slow drip.
