Hi have a 2007 Mini Cooper S Automatic, and I drive it in manual mode most of the time.
I am curious why when I get to a stop it goes to 2nd gear and not 1st?
I do admit that 1st gear is low and is usually not needed.

Can this behavior be changed?

 

For auto it goes 2-6 gears, but put into sport mode goes 1-5 gears.
So basically when you stop you have to downshift to gear 1.

 

When I am in manual mode and in sport mode it goes to 2nd gear.

It may go to first gear when I am in full Automatic?

 

In manual mode regardless if in sport or not it will only downshift to 2nd. If in auto mode, regardless of in sport or not it will downshift all the way to 1st. Just the way it is...

You are saying that in manual mode, you decelerate to lets say a red light but you let it downshift it only goes to 2nd? Or just in sport mode it goes down to 2nd? If you slap the stick over to get into manual mode (IMO using the paddles only is a brief version of manual mode but it does return back to the gear the car thinks you should be in in a few seconds).

This is normal. You can manually downshift with the stick or paddles though into 1st gear if you would like.

Are you using manual mode just to upshift?

 

No way to change that behavior (Same behavior applies for my 08) with coding. Sorry
