New Timing Chain "kit" $1700??
Hi everyone, long time lurker/first time poster. And right away I need your expertise.
I have an '08 Cooper S with 45,000 miles. My car is being serviced at the dealer at the moment, and wouldn't you know it, there's something else wrong! Guy on the phone tells me that the timing chain is stretched and needs to be replaced. Total price, $1700! He detailed real quickly that there's a whole bunch of things involved, new gaskets and whatnot. Sadly, I'm not a mechanic and I have no idea whether or not this is a correct or fair price.
$1700 sounds a bit high to me.
I welcome and appreciate all your input. Thanks so much.

I had an indie shop do mine for $900 down in Florida. It really is not about the parts. Parts are fairly cheap. It is the labor that gets you considering the dealer is probably charging at least $125/hr.
