Help! Waterpump & Thermostat need replacing?

So I reside in Jacksonville and on my last trip to Atlanta my mini started to overheat and I noticed minor coolant leak? I took it into the local mini dealership they told me I needed to replace the thermostat and water pump and quoted me at 1500.00$. Fast forward a couple of months now the leak is severe and will not hold and coolant or distilled water for more than a hour and smokes whenever I am at a stop. Would this water pump fall under the recall I have a 2009 mini cooper base. This is nuts I just replaced the battery which was not even 2 years old and now this! I love my mini but is turning out to be a lemon!

That sounds like the regular water pump, which would not be a recall item. The auxiliary water pump was the one that was recalled (just for S models).

Is there an independent MINI repair shop near you? They could probably do the job for much less.

$600 is a good price for a MINI. I'd definitely take it in ASAP!

Go to Sam's Automotive off of Parental Home and Beach Blvd. That is a great shop and the lowest labor rates I have ever seen. He works on BMWs and MINIs. Also he charges like $86 an hour plus parts. Trust me I lived a mile from his shop and I got treated great by him.

So a couple of months ago you are told to "fix it" and now the problem has worsened....i realy hope your failure to fix the car in a timely manner has not doubled or trippled the price if the fix..high heat, overheating, etc are all VERY bad....might cost you a head gasket, the head or worse. Things break...especially when neglected.
A non mini shop that does work on mini's, often a bmw shop, or a mini only shop like waymotorworks in atlanta...were it broke...will often do the same work as the dealer for 40% or so less, just due to lower labour costs.

If you were in Atlanta you should have had us do it, our dealers are stealers.

My 2008 had it replaced last fall. My local shop only uses OEM parts and replaced the water pump, timing belt and tensioner for $1,200.00. Depending on the mileage that you have on the car, because its coming apart anyways, the belt and tensioner should be replaced at the same time. If not, this will come up in the future. Save yourself the time and aggravation and have this done also.

The above is the metal one, its been verified by MINI , when we get one in the picture will be updated to reflect so. That picture was one of the last ones before the changeover to the metal housing. Has the "11518604888" part number with metal housing.

Thanks and I hope that helps

Heat is from coolant, which is circulated through a mini radiator (heater core)....when a car has been run low on coolant, it tends to get air bubbles in it....stopping the flow of water/coolant, causing heat issues....refilling, then bleeding the system will fix this...once the leak is fixed.
A uneven idle is not a good sign on a car thst has been overheated....often repeatesly or run hot....can point to a headgasket, or other issue due to having been run hot...
Hopefull all is ok and it is just a minior issue, but sometimes issues do not become apparent for a few miles after it has been initally repaired.....
