Heated rear window, quick question.

Hi All,

Quick question hopefully someone will know the answer too. My Heated Rear Window doesn't seem to be working. The light on the dash console comes on but th window stays foggy. I have not checked the fuse yet (it's been raining in the UK for about the last 2 month!), but if it was that wouldn't the console light stay off? I'm not totally sure the front is either. Could it be a relay? I did a quick search but the forum doesn't seem to show this as a known fault.

Any advice?

Thanks in advance.

David

Find the appropriate fuse for the rear defogger and check and see:
* From production models to 11/2008 = fuse #38 - 30amps
* From production models from 12/2008+ = fuse #40 - 30amps

If the fuse is not blown, then take a multimeter and see if there's voltage at the rear window.
If not voltage, check for wiring separations and cracks.
If there is voltage, check continuity of the electric lines on the rear window.

Thanks Erik, I'd not thought of the multimeter. Nice, thanks.

Happy new year.

This may not be the case at all, but I'll suggest it anyway. A few days ago I switched on my rear wiper to clear some rain from the rear window, and it didn't work. A few seconds later, the "hatch open" light came on. I guess I'd bumped the button on the remote inadvertently. So I closed the hatch properly, and on a hunch, tried the wiper again... and it worked normally. Maybe the heater works the same way, and hatch isn't closed all the way.

Remote chance of that, but for what it's worth.

Thanks all. Turns out after a visit to BMW yesterday I have bigger fish to fry. A cam chain and leaky gearbox shaft to the tune of £1600. I'll worry more about the window another day :d
