Limiting revs @ 4k in neutral or while stationary and in gear would let you get a clean start off the line, wouldn't it?

Something that limits throttle revving in neutral is not going to do a thing for the "money shift" problem (downshifting the car at speed that drives the engine above redline).

So if the driver wants to double clutch and the rev-match speed is above 4000rpm, they have to have a messy downshift. Great work BMW.

Is this rev limit at 4000rpm in place when you're in gear and you have the clutch pedal pushed down?
No need to double clutch.

I have a manual 2010 N18 that does this same thing. I thought the dealer must've left a restrictor in place or something, but it runs normally once moving.

It drives normally, rev matching is not a problem, I do it everyday. It's just when the car is sitting still, neutral or in gear. Hold the accelerator down and it stops at 4000 or just below. Driving and downshifting, everything is normal.

Interesting.....in addition to my 2013 I have a 2009 manual Cooper that does not have this "feature"--must have started in 2010.

From somebody who learned to drive on a car with a non-synchro first gear and had to double clutch or stay in second until completely stopped, double clutching and heel-and-toeing are not mutually exclusive. You heel-and-toe in order to rev the engine at the same time you are braking. Double clutching can be done at the same time you heel-and-toe. I agree that heel-and-toe doesn't need to be done on an all synchro tranny, though.

Heel toe has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not the transmission has syncros. You use the heal toe method to apply the brake and rev-match/blip the engine.

That's what I was saying. You double clutch because the tranny doesn't have synchros.

Wait, so the heeling is healing, and the toeing helps avoid a tow?

But if I double clutch won't I wear out both throwout bearings?

Perhaps I'll never slow down, and avoid this thicket?

I once did a dip-pole jibe with a baby stay in a yacht race off Detroit, and I thought THAT was complicated!

Well at least whatever happens might not happen at redline - or perhaps so?

I'm gonna buy an automatic - I have a headache...

Cheers,

Charlie
