R56 Overheating??? I Think!
Overheating??? I Think!
07 mini cooper s turbo
So yesterday i went to the store got out and came back to my car, turned it on and the little Waring lamp came on for coolant temp, it was yellow then turned red as soon as i turned it on after sitting for good 20 min or so, and now today i drive around and shut off my car the fans stay one for an extended period of time, which then never did before. I moved my car in the parking lot at work only had it on for a matter of minutes and the fans came one and stayed on for 5 min after i shut it off, it was ice cold. the light comes one for a second then shuts back off. doesn't matter if im driving or at a stop it seems to do it when it feels like it and the fans come on while driving noticeably when they didn't before. I checked my coolant level and made sure there were no air pockets in the system and made sure it is holding pressure with no leaks, im mechanically inclined i know when my cars doing something it shouldn't, i have a code scanner and scanned my car and got a code 112b not sure what that is it wont tell me. and not check engine light. To me it seems like the coolant temp sensor is bad saying the wrong temp so the car thinks to do something it shouldnt at the time. I read something about a bad fuse or something, i went and pulled the main fan relay and they shut off but as soon as i put the relay back in they come right back on. Any ideas or issues anyone can think of? im scared im going to wake up in the morning and find my car in ashes or something from the fans coming on, there off now but who knows. Any ideas or suggestions would be awesome cause i was planing on going to lime rock this weekend with it to hang with the minis but im unsure now.

Have you ever worked on the cooling system ie. doing a flush? Did you use the bleeder screw to let out the air? It's kind of hard to find so that's why I ask. It sounds like you're having electrical gremlins more than anything if you're absolutely sure the cooling system is mechanically sound. I wish I could tell you what that error codes means... that's where you need to start. The dealer might be your only help on that one...

The system should burp air on its own into the coolant reservoir, but the BMW factory instructions clearly want techs to vent from the bleeder while filling along with keeping the cabin air fan on low + heat on high. It is part #8 in the picture linked below:

It sits right on top of the thermostat housing. It's hard to see since there are wire harnesses blocking the line of sight. If you move the harnesses slightly out of the way you can see the phillips style head on the screw.
I remember when I flushed my system this Spring that unless I lifted the coolant reservoir up above the radiator support it wouldn't fill and burp the cooling system completely.
I still think it's electrical. If you've been driving around and topped off your coolant I don't think the bleeder would be that big of a deal. I could be wrong though! Too bad we don't have access to proprietary BMW OBD codes. Man I hate that crap.

I hooked my scanner up to it and observed the coolant temp after it sat for a couple of hours and it was still reading 205 deg, went to mini on my lunch and picked up a new sensor and problem gone. i was kinda worried. But all is good now just glad it wasnt something major and now hes running o so much better
