R56 how my mini knows when to change oil and brake?
how my mini knows when to change oil and brake?
My mini has 40k mile on it, and its computer indicated the front brake has 10000 mi left, and oil engine need to be changed in 571mi.
So last weekend, I changed the front brake and changed the oil. Then I proceeded with the reset procedure as outline by many other threads.
After I restarted the car, the computer said next oil changed is due in 21000 mile! and front brake is good for 37000 mile!!
I am dumb founded... can you change those value ? like 10k for oil change and 50k for brake job??

I would not believe what your MINI is telling you.
BMW has taught your MINI to embellish it's service requirements to make you believe you don't have to spend alot of $ to keep your car maintained.
Change your oil every 5k to 7.5k and look at your brake pads amoung other things to see when maintenance may be due.
There are places to find info (Bavarian Autosport) for one, to look for ultimate maintenance schedules.
If you learn to do some of your own maintenance, you may be able to save yourself some $ in the long run. Good luck and have fun.

Yes, that is my plan. To do more frequent oil change, but I like to program the mini as a reminder if possible. And how did it pick a number like 37k for the new brake pad?? The original one was good for 50k ( 40k + 10k left)....
The MINI probably has a random number generator
, I don't know how it came up with that figure ?
Anyway, sounds like you're on the right path.
I'm content to let the indicator just BS me and reset it when I need to

Strobeyprobey is correct on the but it also take into consideration the temperature. Not sure exactly how they calculate that in but they do. And in some ways it make sense that they do but they still put out a miles to change number that is crazy.
As for changing the way the MINI will notify you. That you can not change. I.E. you can not tell it to set an interval of 5K miles to change the oil. that you will have to keep track of your self.
As for the brakes. Big question is did you replace the "wear sensors" if not then the car will definitely show you a low number for when they should be changed. BTW the wear sensors are a two stage sensor. I.E. they will warn you when you have approximately 5k left and then the second stage will trip when you have approximately 1k left on the brakes. But in reality that all depends on how much you use your brakes compared to miles driven. I had both sensors tripped on the front brakes and still got 6K+ out of them without hitting the rivets.

Maybe it knows from the past that you are hard on your brakes and they will not last to 50k
