hello all

On my 2011 Justa 6 speed manual I heard rpm based valve tapping on the right hand side ( from inside the car) during a cold start when I left work in the evening.
Once the motor warmed up it went away?

Also happened again this morning should I be concerned? is it normal?

 

This could be just about anything. I've heard a bad alternator bed cause sounds like valve taps. Look at the belts to see if any have been damaged or have extra rubber. The other issue I can think of is the valve sticking. If dirt gets into the lifter, it would cause a gap and the tap is created when the lifter hits the stem. This can be cured with a flush (done at your next oil change). Products like Mega Power flush and the like you can do yourself -- but be sure to read on which brands actually protect the engine and not harm the engine (the "snake oil" products).

On the 2011 N18 engine there is a strange noise upon start-up. This is caused by the waste gate being fully opened to help warm up the cat and other engine components. There is also a very distinct sound that can be mistaken for valve tap, this would be the Direct Injection system.

I would still drop by the dealer and have them listen just to be sure. My concern was the waste gate open.

 

Carbon build up on the valves can sound like valve tap. However you probably have too few miles for that to occur. I agree with pheatton, ask the dealer to check it out. That is what the warranty is for.

 

It's normal. We had the same concern when we got my better-half's 2010 Justa, and took it back to the dealer so they could have a listen. My MINI does it too.
