Ipod Adapter Issue

Ok i bought another ipod this time its and old ipod nano. connect it to the adapter the mini picture comes up but wont play the music. also would not show up in the nav. do i keep it @ AUX or something else??? or do i need to do the ridiculous priced update @ mini so it could work? help please???
