Just pull up they can be a little hard to take off but a good pull up will eventually get them to come off.

First you need to disconnect the wire to the individual coil that sits on top of each spark plug. If you pry up on the front of the connector (carefully) it will rotate up and "eject" the wiring connector. Now you need to twist and pull carefully on the coil itself. If you are patient and careful the rubber will release from the outside of the spark plug insulator and come off in your hand. A thin wall, 14mm deep socket will remove the spark plug. I also used a piece of rubber hose to remove the last half of the threads and remove the plug. I replaced the plugs in my '07 MCS at 40K miles and found the insulator tip missing a portion of it's outside shell on the #4 cyl. I am going to be interested if my fuel economy picks back up after the next tank. I found the exact NGK plugs that came from the MINI factory on Amazon.com for about $12 ea. Good luck, I hope this helps.

You don't need to lift the clip or disconnect the wire. If you want to take the coil completely off to swap it, then yes, but otherwise it'll pull up and out without the wire coming off. To get more slack, the front of the engine (well, the side of the engine thats facing the front of the car) has a long thin plastic cover that covers the wires, follow the coil wires and you'll see where it goes, pull the cover off and you'll have plenty of slack to remove the coils and put them ontop of the engine.
