R56 '06 vs '11
'06 vs '11
OK if you were getting a great deal on both vehicles do you go '11 Cabrio and have the protection of warranty and maintenance plan? Or do you go '06 cabrio for half the cost of new and take your chances?
Besides the financial aspect, there's a personal preference. I don't particularly like the more bulbous looks and annoyingly cartoony interior of the R56. But that's just my opinion. If you're handy with a wrench, then there really isn't that much to be worried about with the older MINI. The MINI is a decently easy car to work on. If you're not confident about working on your car yourself, however, then the cost of shop labor can kill your "good deal" pretty quickly. I've had nothing but good luck with my R53's. Whatever you decide, I'm sure you'll be happy!

I was all ready to pull the trigger when this '06 Black cabrio came available. Trust me I will be the first to admit waffling back and forth on this decision won't hide from that fact. Its MY mid-life crisis and I can waffle all I want

I personally like the R56 look better. For an unbiased decision you should look at how long you plan on keeping the car and consider the resale value /depreciation of both. I prefer the ease of mind with a new purchase and not having to worry about how the old owner treated the car. I hope what ever you choose gives you many miles of happy motoring.

I'll reiterate what I posted on the other thread.
I am a brand new Mini owner and can only speak from my perspective but the difference in my opinion is huge. Warranty, warranty, and warranty!!! From everything I've read, these cars are expensive to fix when they break. I traded in a 4 year old car on a new mini because my other car's bumper to bumper warranty had expired and the powertrain only had 1 year left. Found a decent deal on a new Mini and jumped all over it.
As for the technical differences between the cars, I don't know enough to be able to tell you.
Overall, there are pros and cons to new vs used. Used = lower price, smaller depreciation hit, but also might be inheriting someone else's problems and repairs are expensive. New = full warranty, newer model so there may be several improvements and enhancements, but it's more expensive and you'll take a bigger hit on depreciation. Personally, if I can afford it I'll take new every time although buying used and getting an extended warranty is also a possible option.
Just my 2 cents.
And I'll add, every car I've bought, every single one, has had problems. New, used, hand-me-down from family members, etc... so for me, I always go into every car with the hope that it won't have problems but the understanding that chances are that it will. Because of that, especially on cars that are expensive to fix, if I have the option I will buy new.

Another consideration. I bought a 2009 that was CPO (certified pre-owned) that had a 6 year 100K warranty. That's right... twice what a new one provides.
If you have the patience, scout around for a CPO that meets your needs...

Please let me know what you think about the sport package. I deliberated over it and wanted it, but could not find one at a dealership in the clubman package i needed.
