R56 2011 Tail lights
+1 on that.
Here's the original thread about the retrofit, which was done back in November: http://www.totalmini.com/forum/97-20...rld-first.html
It's a retrofit. Comparisons to the factory 2011 lights are not necessarily valid. For one thing, the car wouldn't have circuitry or programming to do pulsing. Quite frankly, I don't see the point of doing a retrofit. Some 2011's are now appearing on the streets here and the visual difference isn't obvious unless you look for it, and most of the light isn't even LED.

This does make you wonder if the lights are functioning just as they would on a 2011. Dunno.
That settles it then, we just need a 2011 owner who actually has there car to make a short video.

I will attempt to get my wife outside tonight to see what the lamps do and possibly get some video. I had led's in my '10 MB GLK but in that lighting package, only the brake lamps were led. For the extra money we paid for the lighting package, we thought every light other than the headlamps were going to be led....they weren't. It may be the same with with our '11 MINIs.
The video was worthless because the contrast in light so I won't even post it. The center light of the tail lamp is the turn and emergency flasher. The entire outside of the lamp around the circle is the brake lamp. The reverse light on both outside halves of the reverse light/backup lamps in the rear diffuser. I still would like to see if the vehicle moving and with the brakes applied hard make any difference in brightness and/or strobe effect.
This BMW extra brake light notification under hard braking is called Brake Force Display (BFD). Typically BMW activates MORE brake light under heavy braking here in the US. But in other countries they have flashing lights. In fact, the MINI's FRM module does have the circuitry and I am working on activating the programming on my car. It appears that I can use the BFD2 in a mode where it will flash and or use the rear fog light for the extra display. I was planning on trying it this week. I will report back.
Came across this when I was checking out the MINI site - didn't realize MINI had added the feature:
http://www.mini.ca/en/mini/cooper_s/safety/index.html
"Dynamic Brake Light
During normal braking, the brake lights light up across their entire surface – during emergency braking, they start to flash. This allows vehicles behind to distinguish between gentle and full-on braking. The automatically activated hazard warning lights then help to defuse the critical situation."
I also didn't realize the MCS gets standard adaptive (left/right) xenons in Canada

Seems to be no reference to anything like this at http://www.miniusa.com
Each holds a 21W single-filament bulb. Top to bottom: brake light, turn signal, and back-up light.
Concentric around the center 21W bulb is an assembly of LEDS that serve as the rear running light.
I have not looked inside the driver side tail light but don't expect it to be very different.
There seems to be no provision for exotic flashing or for increasing the illuminated area.
