R56 test drove spice orange 2011 cooper s today....
Here are the fees:
- exchange (obviously)
- 6.1% duty
- normal taxes for your location (ie, Ontario = 13% HST).
- $200 in fees to the Registrar paid at the border
- ~$500 to BMW/Mini if you want their stamp of approval (you can get around this!), which I paid last time.
- whatever fees you need to pay to license your car locally (ie, Ontario = Safety & e-Check for used, nothing for new!)
You will lose the free scheduled maintenance, but you might be able to get a US dealer to knock off a few bucks for this. I'm looking at CPO'd BMWs right now, and the few dealers I've spoken with are willing to "de-CPO" a car and sell it at a discount. (CPOs warranties aren't carried across the border if the car is imported)
You'd be amazed how difficult a process the gov't makes this. I was looking into this for a friend in Toronto. It's a ton of filing fees plus import taxes and the only way to really save on an import is to go the used route...which even that has to be a certain age/mileage to qualify. It's sadly cheaper to just buy new, even with the markups.
Don't want to thread-jack, but if the OP has questions, feel free to drop me a PM. I don't do this as a business, but am happy to offer pointers to fellow members!
I drove one today...
Power was nice, wouldn't say its totally different from a normal R56, but you can tell it pulls a little more in the mid to up-top range, which is welcomed. I think you'll be able to get nice numbers out of them with a tune, by tweaking the dual vanos

Shouldn't be close to the same price; I bought our last Mini a few years back in the US for 19k USD (used), and it cost me 24.5k CAD by the time I had it back in Canada - exchange was at $0.95.

It's actually pretty easy! No difference for new/used (brand new cars sometimes take a month or two to show up on the list of importable cars) - actually new cars are easier then used cars, because there is less paperwork (virtually none!) and less fees (though only by a few hundred $$$). Helped my father in law by a new Hyundai a couple of years ago - it was a breeze...

Me Too!!
I'm clearly in the minority, but I think the new interior changes, with a black leather/leatherette interior, are a step back. Whats the difference between the new base MINI interior and the interior of a 93 Toyota Tercel with vinyl seats? Both have black seats, dash, steering wheel, and round vents.
I know the fake silver plastic in my car is in fact fake and plastic, but it breaks up the black and makes me feel better about spending $20k on a car that does nothing better than a $13k Hyundai Accent hatchback

I agree!! I'm beginning to like my 07 R56S's interior better now that I've seen the '11 interior in person. Sure the silver is plastic, but the contrast with the black makes the MINI unique. All black interiors are not.
The placement of the audio controls and the feel of the black rubber controls, the HVAC unit are way better. I disliked them in the pre 2011 2nd gens. I love my 05 for the controls and tactile materials. My interior is all black. Black leather, black headliner and anthracite trim. With an all black car, it's the look Im going for.
If you want to spice it up, why not get the colour line in grey or beige? Lounge leather with beige piping? Chrome line interior? The options are endless. The interior of the one I pictured is just one example.

It's always like BMW to save the best for last. BMW gives out the better std options when they are 1-2 years away from the next generation. I for one am glad to wait for the 2011. The exterior changes are very nice n aggressive and the interior looks so much more mature.
The interior looks more mature? Huh? I saw one in person yesterday, NOT IMPRESSED. If you did not know mini's very well, you would not notice the difference. I know mini's, and i think it makes the interior look cheap. The brushed aluminum look, or chrome line look is a good contrast, otherwise it looks like a "sea of cheap black plastic". But, as we all know, everyone has their own tastes and opinions. In the big scheme, it is a very minor change from the 2010's.
But VW/Audi are hands down the BEST at black interiors. Actually, interiors period. That why I want color/contrast in a MINI interior. They can't compete in interior design and fitments...some "flair" is necessary. My opinion.
I'm with you. Can't believe they got rid of redwood lounge. And also, what happened to the grey lounge leather with black piping they were supposed to have for 2011? don't know if i would have liked it but i thought it would be on the configurator?
