LSD into a R56??

Is anyone aware of the possibility of swapping a used R53 LSD into a R56? I have an '07 MCS with sport mode & a gang of ALTA suspension/intake/tubes/exhaust gear in it & H&R coils. I plan on tracking/auto-xing the car in the future & just wonder if they are compatible. If not, I will hold out for a Quaife.

Why not the OEM LSD from an R56? (I've no idea if they're the same or different, but why the R53 one rather than an R56 one?)

Isn't the 2nd Gen manual transmission entirely different than 1st Gen? I'd be surprised if the old LSD fit.

The Giken one works on the R53 and R56S.

probably because all the gen 2 LSDs are electronic systems now, making them smart brakes, and not LSDs.

Not so sure about that ... the smart braking is part of the DSC, but LSD is still mechanical, which is not to be confused with EDLC.

I've heard they're doing away with the LSD option, but it still shows as being available on the MINI configurator.

doing away with LSD on 2010 models, but starts Sept 09, via motoringfile; so already in effect?

not sure if the configurator would differentiate between LSD and eLSD if they'd only offer one or the other.

No, the cutoff is sometime early next year (January?), as of now, you can still order it. Alas I left it off my build, and when I changed my mind later the same night, by the time I tried to add it the next morning, my car was already into production. Not a big thing since I'll likely never track or autocross the car, but still now wish I had it.. especially so close to the cutoff date. '10's with LSD will be rare birds indeed.

EDLC (it is not eLSD) is part of the DTC option. LSD is pictured as a mechanical device. They are distinctly different in the Configurator. I'd get both if I were ordering now.

How much would it cost to retrofit an OEM LSD or one of the aftermarket ones?

Hi Romo, it varies on the labor rate. You need to remove the tranny, open it up, install LSD, put it all back together and put back in car. Most shops will want 14-16 hours for the job.

What's the cost for the LSD? I really could use one in mine. Love the JCW torque, but do not like the one wheel wonder.

The Giken is only $1590.00

Since it's a large investment of labor, yours or a shops, you might also want to do the clutch at the sametime if you think you might need one. We've seen guys toast a clutch in under 50K and other get more then 100K it's just up to you. The Giken clutch with flywheel is also $1590.00. Can also get other good clutches with flywheel for under a $1000.00

Also want New Bearings only $50.00 a set and 2 qts of Royal Purple Synchromax $28.00

If you are thinking about this set up and need a supplier please drop me an email at dustin@autoxcooper.com Thanks Dustin

If I was going to go through all the trouble of adding a LSD to an R56, I'd get something with better lock % than the OEM unit. Get a Quaife or OS Giken.

He's putting it in a 07, they had mechanical LSDs until sometime last year. (I know they did in 08 anyway, Shawn has mechanical LSD.)

As of today a the mechanical LSD is still able to be ordered in a new R56 MCS. I have read somewhere that it's days are numbered. To be replaced by another electronic traction nanny (DTC).
