An update: After attempting to get it to make the cold start rattle by moving it a short distance, parking pointed down hill, leaving it overnight, etc. and a failing to hear it...

It happened one morning after moving it out and back in the garage, then changing wheels. Next morning, cold start rattle. I couldn't reproduce it later. Made an appointment anyway. Thought it unlikely that they would reproduce it, but at least I'd be on record complaining about it.

The said they wanted to keep it a week and gave me a Clubman. Amazingly, they found it and replaced the timing chain tensioner. They said the chain was not damaged, and didn't mention anything about a vacuum pump.

 

I'm closing in on 32,000 miles. What type of policy did you buy and from whom (and for how much loot) may I ask?
