I've always read - Higher for radar, lower for lidar.

Yep a radar detector should always be mounted as high as possible to get the earliest possible detection, it could be the difference between getting a ticket or not for speed traps just on the other side of hills (very common). For laser detection placement doesn't really matter cause if your getting a strong signal (it on you) your caught, if your getting a stray it could be coming off of anywhere. Laser jammers do should be mounted central/low, or closest to the reflective surface they will most likely use (headlights/lic. plate)

Exactly ^

Laser detectors are worthless for detecting laser aimed AT YOU (at that point, you're caught and it's too late) - the best you can hope for is to pickup some scatter from another vehicle. In my experience, they're pretty worthless for that, also, but YMMV.

Whatever you want to do, was just passing along the information provided by a former LEO and persistent tester of radar/laser detection/jamming equipment. If I wanted to rely on manufacturer claims, I'd end up with a Rocky Mountain Radar unit.

If you get hit by a laser you're toast. The best you can hope for is your detector picks up a stray signal bouncing off another car.

This mount is a great option for anyone wanting a very clean and functional install.

I use the 'Smokey and the Bandit' style of radar detector. Find someone who is traveling 'outside the fringe of the law', hang back a 1/4 mile and let him become your radar detector.

One really has to use all available methods to maximize roller evasion. Having a V1, keeping a faster car ahead of you, slowing when the terrain allows the troopers to utilize 'crypsis' as an entrapment technique, always looking out for non-standard police vehicles, and jumping inside of gaps in trucker convoys are just some of the ways to keep the points down on the license. It doesn't hurt to have your favorite deity on your side, either.

Ummm, you could always try slowing down...

That being said, I run my Passport 8500 flat on the dashboard stuck to one of those tacky sticky pads since suction cup mounts are (almost) illegal in California. Works fine for me. Saved me twice so far. Gave me plenty of time to slow down. (241 North approaching the 91, and 15 South approaching Baker if you want to know.)

That is exactly where I mounted my V1. That has to be the best place in the car. Its in my face and unobtrusive.
