R56 Oil level question
I have the red dipstick.... I take it out, dry it off, then reinsert it.
Take it back out, and the oil level is where it is shiny.... the red plastic is matte, and the oil will make it shiny. I don't have a problem at all reading the level on the OEM dipstick...
Then again, I was born in Germany...

thanks for the info!
While the answer in post 23 is false, it will not raise engine oil pressure, overfilling IS a serious issue.
When overfilling some engines, our engines probably included because of the crankcase design, you run into issues with the crank counterweights coming into contact with liquid oil, not vapors like it is used to.
I tested this with a blown SB Mopar engine, it had a hole in the block so you could easily see the crank. With a 6qt pan, 7qts of oil raised the oil level to the point that it was nearly touching the counterweights. At speed, the amount of stretch that the metal parts have and sloshing of the oil would certainly cause contact.

This is a useful answer.
If it doesn't cause a problem, it means there is more oil in the sump. For those who stick to the 15,000-20,000 mile interval between changes, more oil would be a good thing. I think it this practice of overfilling did cause problems we would be hearing about it here on NAM.
I hope there are no problems...My oil level is definitely above the max line and I have 14,000 miles now........I changed after break in at 1300.
When my service is due in a month of so I am going to ask they wait for it to drain for a full hour so that it will drain properly....then give me the 4.5 quarts.

As soon as that oil level gets high enough for the crankshaft rod ends to touch it, your oil gets quickly whipped into a foam.
This will cause your engine to lose all oil pressure, we have no oil pressure guage, just hope that the idiot light gives you enough warning.

A friend of mine blew a seal in a Toyota by over-filling it, but that was a longtime ago.
I still have enough warranty left for it to be MINI/BMW's problem it the engine gets destroyed.
